IIoET (Industrial Internet of Every Thing) is driving insights and efficiency in the (manufacturing) industry. Robots, automation technologies, sensor data, machine 2 machine (M2M) communication and machine learning (AI) work together to create autonomous smart machines, connected factories, smart grids and smart homes.

IIoET adds intelligent connections between everything (devices, people, processes, and data). IIoET systems make sensor data more meaningful and should provide a secure, usable infrastructure that lets actionable information be shared across the business ecosystem.

As every millisecond of every day new IIoET data is created, we are incrementally stepping into an era where every living and non-living object brings value to someone else. Whether it’s our homes, our cars, or our bodies, everything is generating data that someone else wants and needs. However, the activity of data collection alone brings no real advantage. IIoET can generate business value when companies can integrate the IIoET data within E2E business processes.

The introduction of big data, in-memory database technology, predictive analytics, cheap bandwidth, machine learning, more-affordable sensors and smart phones have transformed the purpose and usefulness of IIoET. This wave of change is enabling companies of all sizes and industries to do more with IIoET-generated data. The technology is enabling organizations to analyze data and perform algorithms on a bigger scale to improve E2E business processes.

Customers expect products to add value in the form of convenience, reliability, privacy, or efficiency. Many companies are finding new and profitable revenue streams in the form of value-add services. This is disrupting traditional business models and creates new areas of revenue opportunity. The most popular IIoET use cases are around connected; assets (predictive maintenance), products (vending machines), fleets (logistic optimization), infrastructure (energy grids), markets (parking tracking) and people (patient monitoring).

The NAF IIoET Expert group

The NAF (Netherlands Architecture Forum) organisation started an IIoET expert group to investigate the impact of IIoET on the Enterprise Architecture within the different industries. The IIoET expert group has defined an IIoET Enterprise Architecture (EA) framework which can be used to consolidate the findings and perform IIoET maturity checks. This IIoET EA framework covers the following 3 main topics;

1 Enterprise Application Management (EAM) 4 IIoET

The different kind of IIoET applications will serve different companies in different ways. How will the business processes and standard operating procedures change to define the new Ways of Working within the existing organization? What are the required IIoET applications and how will they be aligned into the existing hybrid (ERP) application landscape to create the required synergy ? How will the IIoET applications be interfaced with the existing landscape and what integration platforms are required ? EAM ìs responsible for creating the; 1 business process architecture which is supported by the business owners, 2 application architecture which supports application rationalization and 3 interface architecture which assures the synergy of the application landscape and consistency of the IIoET data.

2 Enterprise Information Management (EIM) 4 IIoET

As companies continue to collect more IIoET data from a variety of sources, EIM data management must integrate IIoET data on the devices and application data across the E2E IIoET data stream and avoid big data silos. With the help of advanced analytics and data science, decision makers can gain insight never thought possible. These insights must be integrated within the existing EIM (EDW) architecture to support performance management reporting and LEAN process optimization. EIM is responsible for the; 1 alignment of the (IIoET) data clusters across the landscape, 2 integration of IIoET data insights into the (EDW) data model and 3 the alignment of the IIoET reporting and data science insights with the E2E processes.

3 Business Transformation Management (BTM) 4 IIoET

Many companies are experimenting with IIoET use cases and determine the potential profitability. Companies must rethink their value propositions towards their customer segments and define the impact on the operating model and strategic business objectives. The strategic business objectives 4 IIoET lead to business requirements which define the scope of projects within the IIoET program. BTM is responsible for the; 1 alignment of the operating model with the project portfolio, 2 prioritization and monitoring of the progress of the projects and 3 the QA check on the IIoET projects according to the ITSM project methodology.

This picture gives an overview of the IIoET Enterprise Architecture framework;

The IIoET workgroup is looking for NAF members who are willing to participate in one or more of these topics, to improve and extend the IIoET EA framework and execute IIoET maturity checks at various industrial organisations. Interested ? Please send a mail to Frank.luyckx@capgemini.com
