Which Model to use?

Dear Community,

We are currently designing an 'architecture' which is composed of the following models.

Level 1 - Organization Chart

Level 2 - VACD

Level 3 - EPCs

The Organization Chart model, VACD and EPCs will be published for Line Managers whereas end users will only have access to VACD and EPCs.

As the VACD and EPCs already contain many objects we don't want to burden the model more with additional objects like 'External Person', etc.

So we are thinking about having another model in between Level 1 and Level 2.

Diagramatically this is how the 'architecture' looks like:

So the model in between level 1 and 2 should contain the following:

So what would happen is if a Line Manager wants to know which are the processes used in Business Unit C, then after accessing the Organization Chart, he / she will click on the assignment next to BU C and model XYZ will be displayed. In Model XYZ there will be information relative to the sections and sub sections of the Business Unit and also the VACD used by these entities. Also attached to the VACD are any 'External Person' who interact in the process. Additionally there will be assignments on the VACD objects which would ultimately lead to the VACD models and subsequently to the EPC models.

We managed to get the Organazation Chart, VACD and EPC mapped. The only problem now is to find which model type to used to map 'Model XYZ'.

I was thinking about another VACD but I can't put assignments on the 'Organisation Unit' object from Organization Chart to display the VACD.

I shall be most grateful for your advices and suggestion.

I'm using a SIPOC model to design this intermediate level.

This represents the context of the process without a fluxogram.

Doing the correct conections, I can also create a automatic RASCI table.

I tried to map the SIPOC model but unfortunately there is no such model type in ARIS 7.1.

Any other idea?

SIPOC is part of the ARIS 6 Sigma solution, that also includes additional 6S model types and reports (e.g. Fishbones).

You are right. I was looking in the wrong direction :)

If I may ask, do you know any other model type that I can use to map the information described in model XYZ above?

If I could use VACD model type, this would have been great; unfortunately I cannot put the assignments on the 'Organization Unit' objects which would ultimately lead to model XYZ (if XYZ was of VACD type model).

I tried and managed to map the information (Model XYZ) using 'Quick Model' type but I'm not sure if this is the proper way to do it :).

By this I mean I made my Organization Chart, and then add assignments to the 'Organization Unit' objects which in turn leads to the relative ‘Quick Model’.

I'm sorry. I forgot to say that I build this SIPOC using a EPC model. I also don´t have ths 6 sigma solution for ARIS. I enabled the objects that I need and build the skeleton of SIPOC with normal lines. I chose to use the EPC by the range of objects (such as products, services, events if necessary ...) In a moment, I thought about making the link objects in the VAC, but prefer not to "pollute" the model and did this intermediary.

If you want I can export and send you a model in complete method as example.

Hi Shameen,

The way you structured your architecture doesn't look "right" to me since you are mixing up the process view and the control view of the ARIS method (that's also the reason that you cannot create the assignments).

What you should do IMHO is create a regular process hierarchy and use org unit types to indicate that for example "Accounting" is doing this process. However, you might have multiple org units (the instances of that org unit type) in multiple regions/business lines doing accounting. These will be mapped in additional org chart(s).

Then I would create a report, that get started on your org chart (on one of the objects) and this would create a function tree of your process objects from where you can drill down then into your process views. The function tree basically hides the non-applicable processes for this org unit (or to say it correctly - it only includes the process objects that have a relationship to the org unit type, that have relationships to the org units, and the assigned models below your functions).

Does this make sense to you?

Hi Shameem,

You are trying to achieve is called the 'View Concept' .

This allows you to build some views on same process repository to cater to specific audience.

e.g. If Auditors needs to look at the processes, then they may not be interested in complete process mesh, but only on the process that are audit / finance relevant. View would allow you create this 'Entry Page for Auditors' here Level 1, Level 2 models would point to 1 or more than 1 process models in the process heirarchy. OR if IT team needs to look at the processes, then they will have their customised view to only set of processes they are keen to look at from complete process pyramid.

Folder structure may look like this

1. Common Structure

2. Main Group

> Level 1 Process

> > Level 1.1 Process

>>> Level 1.1.1 Process

3. Views Groups

3.1 > Audit View Process

Sub view process >> Level 1.1.1 process

3.2 > Your XYZ View process as mentioned above

sub view process > > Pointers(assingments) to respective process in the main group above.

Your top level Entry Page should allow access to Views and Also Top Process.
