Question: How can I reduce the size of my database ?

Once again, Hi Community,

I tried to reduce my database size by removing all graphical elements from the remaining models but that didn't change anything.

anyone got another suggestion?

Have you tried to run a reorganise on your DB? This should delete all object definitions, which don't appear in any model.

This really did the trick!  (why didn't I think about that). I thought that deleting the groups (with models and objects therein) would have done the job.

Now the database only takes 415kB, which is a reasonable size.

yes, objects are deleted if the group gets deleted. I tested that a few seconds ago with ARIS 7.2. This probably means that in your case the object definitions were stored in a different group than the model they occurred in.

Since I removed almost all groups from the database, it was odd that I still had 65MB out of 82MB I started with. So even removing the groups did not remove everything. The reorganisation did however.

I also checked the influence of a graphical elements on the size of the database and found out that creating headers with fragments seems to create sort of "definition copies" in stead of an "occurence copy" and eats much more memory than just copying the graphical element from one model to another.

the same set of models with copied headers (graphical elements and attribute fields) was only 244kB while creating the headers in these models with a fragment lead to 1277kB. I therefore think that I will recommend our modelers to avoid using fragments too often.
