TO GAF, or not to gaf? Well, the community of enterprise architects says “TOGAF”. And analysts consider the latest release of TOGAF specification, version 9 positively too. So what ARIS Platform has to offer to its users?
ARIS Platform got TOGAF certified in summer 2008 and since this time has been offering a free of charge reference database on TOGAF support with ARIS. And with the latest service release 7.1 SR5 we updated the reference database to reflect certain changes between TOGAF8 and TOGAF9. Architecture Development Method has been updated and linked with taxonomy of viewpoints from Architecture Content Framework. Every architecture deliverable – catalog, matrix, core diagram or extension diagram - is modeled in ARIS either using the new TOGAF Diagram or existing comprehensive ARIS modeling best practices. And all this is free for our customers!
Would you like to know more? Then join our public free of charge webcast on “Enterprise Architecture with ARIS and TOGAF9” to learn about TOGAF, live walk thru our TOGAF reference database as well as benefits of using ARIS out-of-the-box capabilities to support your TOGAF-based enterprise architecture development initiative. Looking forward to meet you online next week!
Hi Konstantin,

I'm ARIS Added Value in Morocco and one of my prospect is interested in using ARIS for his EA project.
I have a presentation to do next week, and i woud like to study the ARIS TOGAF reference database before my meeting.
Thank you for your help.

Hi Konstantin,
I use ARIS (7.0.2.x). I have a work in which I must use TOGAF.
I read your webcast, but the time of it is not good for me.
Please, where should I download the ARIS TOGAF reference database? Is it possible to give me this location?
Thank you for your help!
Regards
Istvan
Hi Konstantin,
Thanks for your help!
Can you help me where can I find this TOGAF8 database?
We use the ARIS designer platform only.
Is this TOGAF database between the models or in a special installation directory or in a special downloadable directory? I can't find this.
Regards
Istvan
Hi Konstantin,
We've got 2 installation CDs. I found the "Databases and Filters" directory on the second CD, but it doesn't contain the TOGAF database. It containes only: BPMN with ARIS; Business Rules Examples.
Does it mean that we haven't got any TOGAF database for our ARIS platform (IT Architect and the Easy Design only)?
Regards
Istvan
Hi everbody,
yesterday we had a very interesting webcast about Enterprise Architecture with ARIS and TOGAF 9, which I can highly recommend. Konstantin presented, how the TOGAF9 enterprise architecture framework defines the results to be delivered by EA initiatives and the procedure for obtaining them.
You can download the presentation here. On the second slide you will find a link of recording.

Hi Kinstantin,
I am running ARIS 7.1 SR5 and had imported TOGAF 9 database and filter.
I cannot see most of the assignemnts in the Taxonomy of ACF. According to TOGAF 9 Webex (troubleshooting slide) I am missing a TOGAF key extension (.mdf).
Can you advice where this can be downloaded from? I cannot see this under ARIS downloads.
- Kris
All,
please, note that since couple of months there is an information on our website re: ARIS & TOGAF:
http://www.softwareag.com/corporate/products/aris_platform/reference_content/togaf/default.asp
And there is an expert paper "Enterprise Architecture with ARIS & TOGAF" for download:

Konstantin,
I had now a bit more time to review the reference model. What I'm missing is Business capabilities. I find Business Capability management as one of the essential enhancements of version 9. It's an approach already proven by DoDAF and other frameworks practitioners. So what is the ARIS support for that?
Currently in ARIS "capability" form an abstract layer between process and means for support (services, applications, appliances). It's nice to have something which both represents a global need and a global ability that could be provided locally in different ways.
But that's not working for business capabilities which are supposed to "stay" higher than processes, organization and business services which are elements that could be configured in a different way to support one and the same business capability.
So, is there any support for that and if not what's the workaround you'd recommend?
Regards
Ivo
Ivo,
Business Capability Management is not a part of TOGAF ver 9, it is external to the method. See the information on the page 106. May be you mean Architecture Capability Framework?
In any case Capabilities are not a part of TOGAF Architecture Content Framework.
However ARIS encompasses Capabilities since 2006 when we first introduced demand and supply into process context. Nevertheless Capabilities are not limited to the functional "glue" layer between consumers and functional resources. Capabilities can be considered as a top level in analysis of an enterprise and exactly in this way we are using capabilities in our realization of MODAF\NAF frameworks.
Do you have any certain concerns about the usage of Capabilities? Please, let us know!

I tried to view the video link but i get the "video not found or access defined" error, can you make it available?
Also, we have IT Architectu + TOGAF9 installed, are there any quick-start guides specifically for using the tool, we're not too sure how to start using it (we understand how TOGAF works but not how to use the tool with it :)
thanks
Sam, seems the direct link to the recording is not liked anymore by the underlying system. I corrected it to the generic link - please, open it and browse for the webcast.
Re: quick start quide - I will ask Chrisitian Rieger to contact your company. In fact usage of the tool is nothing in comparison with understanding "how TOGAF works". :-)

Hello Konstantin,
I have downloaded your report and I am for month unsuccessfully trying to get TOGAF 9 reference database. From Web, from Czech subsidiary, no way.
Is that important piece of content still available? And how can I get it?
Thank you in advance, Pavel
Hello Pavel,
I assume you use SAP Enterprise Modeling by IDS Scheer. In such a case you definitely should clarify whether the free-of-charge TOGAF key for ARIS IT Architect or ARIS IT Designer is also available for your tool.
You can find ARIS TOGAFv9 Database and Filter at ARIS DVD or online at ARIS Download Center, unter ARIS Platform 7.2, Databases & Filter.
In Czech Republic please contact our EA champion Josef Miklos.

Dear Rabea,
The TOGAF 9.1 reference model database is part of the ARIS DVD which can be downloaded from the ARIS Download Center at http://aris.softwareag.com. The package comes with a filter, a query, 2 reports, and a brief documentation.
In case you are using ARIS Connect Server the licensing for TOGAF is included, in case of ARIS Design Server then the Extension Pack TOGAF is a separate license.
Cheers
Rune
