Hello David,
in Architect Menu ARIS > Options > Model > Layout
you can deactivate the option "Allow connection alignment across objects" for automatic layout generation (placement of objects). Then you have to trigger the layout for the whole model or a marked part of it.
But this is not a default setting for creating new connections or the "optimize connection alignment" function.
On drawing a new connection you can determine the points where it should bend with shift key + mouse click.

Thanks Martin,
I had already tried to deactivate the option "Allow connection alignment across objects" and tigger the layout, but for some reason it keeps allowing connections across objects:
Can't figure out what the option "Allow connection alignment across objects" really does.

Hello David,
well, the layout algorithm is not AI. I am on Aris 10 SR20 and the ruleset for epc graphs does make a difference if connections across objects is not allowed. I do not have experience with the bpmn graph ruleset.
I assume you need to nudge the layouter into the right direction with different docking points like on the upper edge of your tasks.
Or you raise an issue with support.
