Hi,
could you describe what the problem is? You need to press the pencil symbol first. Then you get a dialog to maintain the link.
Bye,
Frank
Hi Frank,
Thanks for your response.
I will describe what I am doing, I right click on the task, it opens a dialogue box called 'Object Properties', to go to the tab called 'Selection', I am then in the 'Attributes' box. I go to the field called 'link'.
I understand what you are saying about using the 'Pencil' icon, [edit link], and the dialogue box comes up called 'edit link'. Even though this is successful, I test this by returning to the 'task' and press F7 and the link does work and directs me to the location I am seeking.... the challenge I have with this is the following: how can a user tell that the 'task' etc has a link, that is without drilling down and looking at the attributes?
I've spoken with another user of ARIS Express who advised that in the full version of ARIS the 'Running Man' icon can be used in the same way. AND, the Running Man icon is also visible on the task, i.e. the user can see that the task has a link.
So, my question is, does the ARIS Express 2.3 software have this functionality? And if not, is their another way to indicate on a task etc that it has a link, without drilling down into the attributes box etc.
I look forward to your response.
Kind regards
Samantha
Hi Samantha,
this snippet here is taken from the ARIS Express online help, available via the ARIS community:
>>
Similar to other attributes, you can place the Link attribute in the modeling area by clicking on the attribute value in the Attributes pane and simply dragging it to the modeling area. The attribute is placed in the model window and is preceded by a symbol, and you can start the link by pressing F7.
<<
As every other attribute, you can place the attribute in the model, so it is displayed.

Hi Frank
Thanks for your response.
I still haven't resolved my query.
How do I make a symbol appear in the model? To quote you and the website 'the attribute is placed in the model window and is preceded by a symbol' I would like to see a symbol in the model, but can't seem to get this to work. Whilst I appreciate that the F7 functionality works, there is nothing to indicate that a link exists....
How can I visually indicate in the map/model that a link exists. I was informed by a another user that this was possible, ie that the running man icon would appear in the model/map, but I can't make this work.... any ideas??????????????? has anyone been able to do this in ARIS Express 2.3?
Kind regards
Samantha
Hi Samantha.
Did you read the help page which I linked?
Just maintain the link and drag the maintained link into the model wherever you want, e.g. directly next to the symbol -> a corresponding symbol is shown.
Bye,
Frank
Hi Frank,
I did read the help page you directed me to and am still unsuccessful in making it work.
The result is this, a black circle with a line across it, like a non-entry sign, and the symbol isn't inserted in the map.
Samantha
Hi Samantha,
could you please paste a screenshot here in order to get me a better impression how it looks like?
Bye,
Frank
Hi Frank,
I've attached a screenshot (that I've cut/cropped), which has the three key elements I've been writing about. The first is the task/activity 'SOP1002 Scan and Allocate Documents', the second is running man symbol (next to the link symbol), the third (which I had to Google as it dissapeared when using screenshot software) is the no entry type symbol that comes up (but in black) when I try to drag the running man icon into the task activity.

I hope this clarifies what I am seeking to understand about this software.
Is it possible to drag and drop the running man icon into/next to an activity to indicate visually that a link exists?
Regards,
Samantha
My attachment doesn't seem to want to work... not sure how to proceed now.
Hi,
generally, it is not possible to drag/drop the "running man symbol" into the model.
You need to drag/drop the content of the link attribute itself into the model. According to the URL, a dedicated symbol will by created for the link. If it is a Microsoft Word document, a word document symbol will be created. If it is a Powerpoint file, a Powerpoint symbol is created and so on...

Frank
