Hi,
I have a question which I had posted in one of the previous forum but not getting any feedback and I am shifting the question into a new forum topic.
Question -
May I model an organisational business process in the following structure? which one is allowed and which one is not allowed? (Level 4 is a sub-process)
- LEVEL 1 (VACD) ----- LEVEL 2 (VACD) ------ LEVEL 3 (BPMN) ------- LEVEL 4 (BPMN)
- LEVEL 1 (VACD) ----- LEVEL 2 (VACD) ------ LEVEL 3 (EPC) ------- LEVEL 4 (EPC)
- LEVEL 1 (VACD) ----- LEVEL 2 (VACD) ------ LEVEL 3 (BPMN) ------- LEVEL 4 (EPC)
- LEVEL 1 (VACD) ----- LEVEL 2 (VACD) ------ LEVEL 3 (EPC) ------- LEVEL 4 (BPMN)
No. 1 and no. 2 are allowed and no question about it.
But I am not sure if no. 3 and no. 4 are allowed even though Aris Connect permits such creation.
Regards,
Anning
Hi Anning, this has nothing to do with the question whether this is allowed, but everything with the question: what does the organization wishes to accomplish?
Before I go into that, I would however suggest that for levels 3 and 4 it would be advisable to stick to one notation and not to change notations between these levels. Chaning the notation will not improve the readability for the end users .
Having said that, the main question would be: what is the purpose of the process models for the customer? If they want to model processes in order to be able to automate them, then the BPMN notation makes most sense. If they model processes for communication or training purposes, then the EPC notation is more widely used (although my personal preference would still be eBPMN in that case).
What also needs to be considered is that the content in ARIS always serves two purposes: (1) it needs to be maintainable (the content needs to be kept up to date, and what structure and model types would facilitate that best?) and (2) the content needs to be able to be consumed easily (why would you otherwise have the content in the first place and what model types/notations serve that purpose best?).
The trend I see with our more mature BPM customers is that they are switching or starting to make plans to switch from EPC to eBPMN.
