Just 24 hours ago we released ARIS Express. In the first day, many people have downloaded ARIS Express and gave it a first test drive. We hope you like it!
Please let us know if you are experiencing any problems installing or using ARIS Express. You can post directly in ARIS Community using your account data. We would also be interested if someone tried to install ARIS Express on operating systems such as MacOS and Linux. On Twitter, we already got feedback that users successfully installed ARIS Express on MacOS and on an Eee PC.
Some of you send in emails asking where they could download the ARIS Express movie. You probably have seen it on the front page of ARIS Community or on this page. We have uploaded the fullscreen version to Youtube and you can also directly download the ARIS Express movie here (about 140MB). Make sure to turn on your subwoofers and pump up the volume!
Hi,
during the beta test, Express was installed on a Mac system. If you got problems running Express under Mac OS, this might help you: www.ariscommunity.com/users/dhunja/2009-08-07-running-aris-express-mac-os-x
Bye,
Frank
Hi Omar,
if you go to the homepage of ARIS Express you will notice a menu in the right sidebar of the page. This menu is called "ARIS Express links". In there are links to the items you are looking for. For your convenience, here the things you ask for:
- ARIS Express comparison to ARIS Platform products
- ARIS Express manual
- ARIS Express tutorials (more English tutorials to come)
Cheers,
Sebastian
Hi Sebastian,
enclose some examples:
1) Start ARIS Express 70 sec.
2) Open Bestelldaten.adf 12 sec
3) Put in a new symbol "Entität" 1.Time 10 Sec 2.Time 1 Sec.
4) Open Attribut 1 Sec
5) Write a new "Beschreibung" and click ok 1. Time 10 Sec. 2.Time 10 Sec
**New test 1.Time 1 Sec 2.Time 1 Sec 3.Time 10 Sec

Hi,
could you describe your hardware platform? We are curious about that, because this helps us defining the recommended basis equipment.
Here, in comparison, are my results. I use a 4 year old, single core laptop.
- Start Express: 25 seconds
- 8 seconds the first time (close the model and open it again: 3 seconds)
- Place a new entity: less than one second
- - not measurable
- - not measurable
Are there other processes running on your PC? Would be nice if you could give us the information about your used hardware system.
Bye,
Frank
Hi everyone,
i just checked out ARIS Express under Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) with Firefox (Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; de; rv:1.9.0.14) Gecko/2009090216 Ubuntu/9.04 (jaunty) Firefox/3.0.14) and OpenJDK (.6b14-1.4.-0ubuntu11). and, what can I say, it does not work at all ;-)
see the screenshot, both windows ("ARIS Express" and "Downloading..") appear, but both vanish after some (2 or 3) seconds.
However, this might be a conflict with OpenJDK, but I wont install the Sun today, i do not want to change my whole system. instead, i am trying windows...
this may be just seen as an answer to "We would also be interested if someone tried to install ARIS Express on operating systems such as MacOS and Linux".
Have a nice day,
Alex
Hi Alex,
thanks for letting us now, even if you had no real success. Personally, I tried installing ARIS Express on Ubuntu 9.04, but with Sun's JDK. Installing works, but startup doesn't. On the other hand, another developer successfully installed it on Ubuntu 9.04 with Sun's JDK. So seems no consistent results possible here.
Cheers,
Sebastian
Got this working on Ubuntu Jaunty (9.04) with Sun Java6 v16.
Open JDK is also installed (and was the default Java web start), had to request that express.jnlp open with the Sun Java 6 webstart (/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.16/bin/javaws) manually.
But otherwise works well
Hi,
I have downloaded and installed Aris express several times and the application is very slow and unusable.
For example, when I launched it, it can take 3 or 4 minutes before seeing something on the screen. After that some parts of the ARIS Express application appear every minutes (as if there was a refresh problem), but the screen is never complete and I cannot use it.
Here are some elements about my configuration :
- Windows XP Professional version 2002 with Service Pack 3 (Note that I also tried with SP2 and I had the same problem)
- 2 GB of RAM, 1,83 GHz
- Java 1.6.0_16-b01 is installed.
Do you have an idea ?
Thanks in advance
Hi,
this could have 2 reasons:
1.) the cache of the JRE is not switched on. This would lead to the fact, that the application is downloaded every time. Check this on the JRE panel, to be started in the system panel (first page: temporary Internet files: "keep files on computer" must be switched on)
2.) Proxy settings: there is a proprietary protocol from Microsoft, used by Microsoft proxies (NTLM). Could you please cross check with your IT, if a Microsoft Proxy is used?
Bye,
Frank
Hi,
we have some thousands of Express installations yet, and rising fast. Apart from some exceptions, they all work fine. Well, your installation seem to be one of that exceptions.
If it does not work as expected, there must be an instance hindering Express to search for the update. You are right, it is possible, that not the proxy is the problem (if you do not have any), but maybe the firewall.
We had also the problem at other users, where the firewall said "No!" if Express tried to search for an update. That caused the same problems you described.
Bye,
Frank
Hi,
After persisting in trying to use Aris Express, I finaly found the problem and also the solution, so I just would like to share it because it did not come from the firewall. Indeed, the trouble was caused by the fact that I do not use a classic windows XP style but I installed a special one.
So I solved the problem by this way :
- going in the start menu, asking for the properties of the "Aris Express" link,
- in the Aris Express 1.0 properties, opening the "Compatibility" Tab,
- checking the box "Disable visual themes".
Have a nice week-end
Severine
Hi Severine,
great to read that you've got success solving the problem.
Never heard of that problem, but good to know that it might happen. Can you give additional information about the XP system you're using, so we can share it with other users, if they have the same problems?
and many greetings to Luxemburg,
Frank
Checking the box "Disable visual themes" worked for me too, although the visual interface occassionally became unresponsive (for up to 10 s).
Before the fix was implemented, Aris ran like treacle.
EDIT: Stating the fix worked for me was premature. Whilst it improved the seriously lengthy delays (tens of seconds) when doing anything (as described by others in previous posts), short delays (10 s) are still present when selecting some objects, which is infuriating. However, its not consistent, and sometimes the application does respond instantly. There is no CPU bottleneck, network activity or Java log error information that provides a clue as to why the delays occur. Java temporary file caching is enabled and java is set to use the company proxy for all protocols.
In addition to the fix described previously, I've discovered that setting the "Color quality" of the Display Adapter to 16 bit rather than 24 bit (right click on desktop, > properties > settings tab > color quality > medium 16 bit), also reduced the unresponsiveness. However, ARIS Express is still painful to use when it does freeze, which is frequently, and I can't recommend it to colleagues as its basically unusable in our corporate environment. Another user at our site has experienced the same problems and has uninstalled ARIS from their PC as a result.
As this issue was initially reported over 9 months ago and has still not been addressed by the developers, it is not indicative that they consider it a serious problem, when for some of us, it is a show stopper.
Hi
I have downloaded and installed Express. But the program doesn't launch and I get no icon on my desc, nor a link to it in the Start/Program files.
I tried this alternative download and the program installed/started rather quickly. But still I don't have an entry to Aris Express on my PC so I can't start it again if i close it.
Java is 1.6.0_21 but I also have Java 2 Runtime Environment 1.4.2_13 installed for some reason. Can that cause the problem? Can I remove it?
Grateful for any help!
Thanks
/Inge
Hi Inge,
during the first startup, the installationen environment asks whether you want to "integrate the application into your desktop". This means nothing else than the creation of start menu entries and desktop icon. You probably have overseen this question.
Try the following:
- open the system panel
- in the system panel, open "Java". The Java control panel appears
- on the first page, section "temporary internet files", click the right button "show"
- The list of installed webstart applications is shown
- right-click onto "ARIS Express 2.2" to get the context menu
- There should be the menu entry "create shortcut" or "create link"... please click on that menu entry
Hope that helps,
Frank
Thanks for a quick answer! I managed to find the problem shortly before your post. The problem was that I never got the question due to that the advanced settings in Java was set to "Never allow" regarding creating shortcuts. After changing it to "Ask" I reinstalled and now it worked.
But your answer surely helped as well! I will pass it to my collegues who already installed and had the same problem.
Thanks!
/Inge
