We are facing an issue with ARIS notification emails. Sending email directly from the ARIS server using the same SMTP server works successfully. However, when sending notifications from the ARIS tool, the email fails. The error 535 5.7.3 Authentication unsuccessful is an SMTP response generated by the receiving mail server (most commonly Exchange Online / Microsoft 365).
It indicates that ARIS attempted to log in to the SMTP server to send a notification or report, but the mail server rejected the credentials or the authentication policy.
Possible Causes
1. Basic SMTP Authentication is Disabled in Microsoft 365: Microsoft 365 disables Basic Authentication (username + password) for SMTP by default on most tenants.
2. Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) or Security Defaults Are Active: If the service account used by ARIS has MFA enabled or if your organization uses Microsoft Entra ID "Security Defaults," traditional username/password logins will be blocked automatically.
3. Incorrect Credentials or SMTP Configuration in ARIS: Verify the mail configuration settings in the ARIS Administration / Tenant Management portal (or cloud-agent / mail service configurations depending on your deployment).
4. Misconfigured OAuth2 (If using Modern Auth in ARIS): If ARIS is configured to connect to Exchange via OAuth2 rather than Basic Auth.
