Everybody knows that the mouse wheel can be used to scroll up and down in arbitrary components that provide a scrollbar. This, of course, works in ARIS’ designer pane as well.

In the following I give you some tips on more things you can do with your mouse wheel, which not everybody might know.

Scrolling left and right

When you press the SHIFT key while turning the mouse wheel in ARIS’ designer pane it will no longer scroll up and down, but it will scroll left and right instead. As visual feedback, the vertical scrollbar disappears while the SHIFT button is being pressed.

This also works in other components than the Designer: try it for example when the focus is in the Explorer (and the horizontal scrollbar is visible).

Changing zoom

When you press the CTRL key while turning the wheel of your mouse, the zoom factor of the current model is changed. Depending into which direction you turn the wheel, it will either increment or decrement the zoom factor by 10 percent each.

Smooth scrolling

When you PRESS the mouse wheel and keep it pressed, you will see the following icon:

If you now move the mouse while still keeping the wheel pressed, the Designer will follow your mouse, i.e. it will scroll into the direction you move with the mouse. The larger the distance of the mouse is from the point where you pressed it initially the faster the scrolling will be done.

This feature is new: it has been realized in the last versions of ARIS Express and ARIS Business Architect/Designer, while the two others above are in the tools for a long time.
