    #LoungeTalk: SOX (Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002)

SOX is in a way the mother of all internal control regulations. Although not the first internal control regulation by a long way, it is the one that has had the greatest impact in terms of its magnitude and its (global) area of application. Enacted in 2002 by the US Congress, it eventually led to the coining of the term Governance, Risk & Compliance, or GRC.

Modeling social aspects of (software) processes

The introduction of a new software process in an organization is a difficult and often risky proposition. This is especially true when adopting agile processes like Scrum that usually imply radical departures from traditional team structures, cooperation styles and relationships. Unfortunately, descriptions of software processes (like this BPM-based view of SCRUM) focus on the sequence of process activities and on the artefacts generated in each activity but they mostly ignore the social aspects of the process, such as:

Commercial use of ARIS Express? Yes you can!

From time to time we receive emails from companies asking if they are (really) allowed to use ARIS Express for commercial projects. It seems they are surprised to receive such comprehensive software free of charge. Let’s take a closer look at the answer to this question.

By combining ARIS for business modeling with webMethods for BPM execution, it is finally possible to transform organizations in even more strategic ways, while closely aligning business and IT departments around common, achievable business goals: • Establish efficient processes that align business and IT around organizational goals • Define role-based workflows that address who should do what and when

BPMN starter guide: Which process type to use?

This guide illustrates the key BPMN process types (models) to consider before you start modeling. Choreographies and Conversation have been excluded in this overview. The focus is also on what Business Analysts need to model (non executable) in order to give a quality handover to System Analysts who will transform the models to an executable standard.

    ARIS Community balance sheet

Today, our new mother Software AG issued a press release about ARIS Community attracting more than 50,000 members in the first year. In fact, ARIS Community is now the biggest pure BPM community in the world. The PR people gave this press release a nice twist by adding a balance sheet. Here are the key figures for the first year they mentioned:

#LoungeTalk: Solvency II requires an integrated approach

For those not involved in financial services, you probably haven't heard of Solvency II yet. For those who do work in insurance, if you haven't heard of it, you must have had a long sabbatical! Insurers are very busy with it: initiating projects, aligning activities with risk, actuarial, internal control and internal audit, compliance and process departments. All of them are struggling with hundreds of pages of advice on requirements from CEIOPS (Committee of European Insurance Supervisors), who are taking a leading role in the preparation of the final legislation.

    Sprint phase of Scrum

Yesterday, I gave you an overview of the software development method Scrum. My previous post included a high level view of the overall Scrum process. Missing in this picture were any details on the Sprint phase. During a Sprint, a new version of the product is developed. At the end of each Sprint, a new shippable version of the product is ready, which is completely tested and documented. In case of small projects, a Sprint should not be longer than four weeks. In larger projects, a Sprint can be up to three months long.
