JD

Hello,

I'm Angelo, a student of the University of Pisa (Italy).

I'm graduating in computer engineering.

My thesis is focused on BPM using ARIS: I have to continue the thesis of an other student that has mapped a process of a company with ARIS business architect.Practically I need to used ppm to analyze the performance and monitor the business.

Fist of all can someone tell me where I can find documentation about ppm?

I have seen the webcast video "Aris process performance manager 5 faster and more effective than ever". It's very interesting but I need also operational documentation as how to import the process mapped with architect in ppm, etc.

Hope you can help me.

Thanks , I love BPM too .. also because i hope to work on it :)

Caro Angelo,

Well, there is actually a lot of technical documentation coming along with the setup of ARIS PPM 5.0.

But it might be too much to download that 1,6 GB ZIP file from IDS Scheer's FTP server just to receive the documents: ftp://ftp.ids-scheer.de/pub/ARIS/helpdesk/PPM500/

Moreover, you will need a password to unzip, which only the ARIS support could provide.

So get in contact with IDS Scheer Italia via the form and ask precisely what you think you need:

http://www.ids-scheer.it/it/Contact/121933.html

Please note that PPM unlike ARIS Business Architect can't be installed that simple. So if your work is theoretically, fine. Otherwise you need technical support for the installation. Maybe your professor wants to join the ARIS Campus for ARIS and particularly for PPM?

I hope some these help you.

Otherwise drop me a mail (click on my name to send via ARIS Community).

Cheers

Rune

Hallo Rune,

I have your webcast video concerning BI+BPM=process intelligence.

It's strange for me reply to a big expert of BPM so first of all let me thank you.

I have alredy install PPM (ppm server side with ppm ctk and ppm gui) and oracle database 10g with corresponding jdbc (the connection is ok).Ids-scheer Italia gave the license to my Professor for me.

I know that installing ppm is not easy on my skin (it's an italian saying).

I have read the documentation in the directory docs of ppm 5.0 for more day and I have done many attempts.

I also have tried to start ppm with demo database umg_en but probably my license it's not compatible with advance analysis because I receive this message:

My problem now is how to configure a client with data source management the process mapped in Aris architect.

I have tried to export an xml file from Architect and import in ppm but I receive an DTD error:

Thanks a lot for any answers.

For today I deserved the bed. :)

Good night.

Cheers

P.S. Soon (hopefully tomorrow)I will tell to my Professor concerning ARIS Campus.

Caro Angelo,

yes indeed, your license key seems not to include the priviledge to execute Advanced Analysis. But I am sure that IDS Scheer Italia could provide you a new license key. You can check the key by looking for "pr". Your key might look similar to this one: "...Ppxmpcomoaprctxsxjxv...".

About your attempt to import a model from ABA to PPM I am not sure what you expected to happen in PPM. If you have SAP as source system you might want to model the process fragments (steps) in ARIS Busniess Architect (ABA) and import them into PPM. That saves some implementation time in case there are many steps to be considered.

A complete process-oriented approach for implementing ARIS PPM is described in the ARIS Value Engineering (AVE). There, ABA is being used for the requirements phases strategy and design to describe which business objectives should be measured by which performance indicators, which processes will need measurement points to feed their calculation and finally which systems will deliver runtime data at the measurement points via which interfaces into PPM. These phases we would run through BEFORE starting the technical part of an implementation of PPM.

However, as you have already runtime data for importing to PPM, you can define the data sources of PPM in its CTK (ARIS PPM Customizing Toolkit). Now you need to choose the appropriate import format of PPM depending on the type of data your source system provides/exports.

Please choose from the 3 options for data import into PPM provides:

  • files (in CSV or preconfigured XML format)
  • databases (via JDBC protocol)
  • SAP (via RFC protocol)

The document about Process Extractors and Data Import describe the details about data import.

And the mapping of source data into PPM structures (indicators, dimensions and attributes) and all other configuration steps are done in the CTK as well.

To fully understand how to implement PPM I recommend to attend the 4-days APPM4 training course. There you can learn all about PPM customizing as we call a PPM implementation.

A workaround that steep learning curve might be that you ask IDS Scheer Italia for the ARIS PPM University Edition. That package includes a tutorial to build up an easy example step by step using the CTK and sample import data (CSV and JDBC). And that package can be applied via the the ARIS Community group ARIS in Education and Research and or directly at ARIS Campus.

Currently that package is available on PPM 4.1.2 and it's already under development for PPM 5.0. But from your learning perspective there is not much difference if you use the 4.x version in the meantime.

Cheers

Rune
