I have downloaded and installed ARIS Express, took all the default settings, tried to start it but get the initial splash screen and nothing else. Checked Java as suggested in some older posts, rebooted, nothing, reinstalled, rebooted still nothing. Any ideas?

OK, with that information, we can't help you.
Please open the Java panel (via the systems panel), and on the last tab (extended/enhanced) and choose to show the java console always.
Not start Express again -> additon debug information should be shown, which could help us to find out why the tool does not start.

1. I choose to always show Java console... 2. then press View and get in Java Cache Viewer 3. there i go... and REMOVE application ARIS Express! mmmm! 4. ...and from Deleted applications i reRISE'n'start IT online. 5. TADAAAA! it's a miracle! it WORKS!!! So i make some dance with my tambourine.
