ARIS Connect Governance Models

Dear Ben,

First of all, the so called mini workflows which are embedded in ARIS Connect Server are NOT part of the ARIS database "Governance Automation Models.adb" (GAM) but reside in "ARIS Connect Governance Models.adb", both databases are provided on the ARIS 9 DVD in folder ./Content/Databases.

The workflows in the GAM database require an additiona license: Extension Pack Process Governance for ARIS Connect Server. And for changing and adapting these workflows you need another client license: Extension Pack Process Governance for ARIS Architect. Otherwise you can't deploy these workflows and neither can view/model in ARIS Architect.

Also, the workflows provided in the GAM database may require some adjustment for being used in ARIS Connect Server. However, the pre-built mini workflows in ARIS Connect Server are already deployed with the installation and work well from scratch, e.g. using our sample database "United Motor Group", where the model attribute "Person resonsible" is for most models maintained, a prerequisite for mini workflows such as Change Request.

Thanks for the info.  However, I am using the ARIS Connect Governance Models.adb, which as you say should be perfectly compatible with ARIS Connect.  Still there are several object types that appear greyed out when viewing the models, even when using the 'Entire Method' filter to view the database. 

I'm wondering whether it is an issue with the system database.  There is a v9.7 system database supplied on the installation media.  Does this need to be imported (updating the current system DB) before I can see these models correctly (e.g. maybe it contains an updated 'Entire Method' filter)? 

You also mention some prerequisites for using the change management mini workflows.  Is there a document that describes these prerequisites?   I have looked through the documents on the installation media, but I don't find any that mention these workflows, the prerequisites for using them, or a best practice approach to incorporating them into an organisation work practices (e.g. best practice organisational structure for operating the governance models). 

Any information would be gratefully received, as I feel a bit stuck on this one..

You can't change/edit the process automation models in ARIS Connect. In fact, to use the full capabilities of ARIS Process Governance you need ARIS Architect with Extension Pack Process Governance.

And no, the SystemDB (asdb_97_0_0.adb) is not needed to improve the access of such or any other models.

Hi Rune,

I'm not looking to change the models, and I'm aware that the 'mini' workflows for change management, model sharing, etc, cannot be changed without the APG extension pack / full product.  

My client has recently adopted ARIS Connect (v9.7) and is in the process of transitioning from a 7.2 environment.  As part of the Connect adoption, they want to start using the in-built change management 'mini' workflows.  The first aspect of their adoption of these workflows is to understand how they work, so I want to show them the EPC representations of the workflows that are supplied in the ARIS Connect Governance Models.adb database on the installation media.  

However, it is these EPC models that I am struggling with.  They seem to contain objects / symbols that don't exist in the symbol pallete available for the EPC model type in my system, hence they are appearing greyed out.  Please see the attachment for an example of what I mean.  This is happening in all models within the database.  

The 'missing' symbols / objects are also not available when I try to add them to the symbol palette in Architect.  Therefore I believe I am missing the fundamental symbol / object definitions, which I thought might be contained in the system database asdb_97_0_0.adb.

Can you advise why I can't see these objects?  I would have expected them to be available, as these models relate to standard content available within the Connect product.

ARIS Connect can't display the specific object types of ARIS Process Governance as well as data flow diagrams. ARIS Connect isn't meant to be used for process governance modeling. Instead, ARIS Architect is meant for that.

Hi Rune, 

Apologies for the delay in responding.  The same issue of greyed out objects / symbols occurs in Architect - I can't see the models in full in any of ARIS products I have available to me. 

Having tried another couple of things to make these models visible, I have reached the conclusion that the object definitions simply don't exist in my system.  I suspect that, as you mention, these object types are specific to the APG product and the object definitions are only available with an APG Extension Pack licence for Architect (which would allow the objects to be viewed in Connect as well, due to the full DB being published).  

I would still like to have a copy of the models so that I can demonstrate the change management process to my client (outside the system is OK).  Would it be possible to send me and export of the complete models in PDF format to allow me to talk the process through with my client?  Alternatively, if the models are available elsewhere, please direct me to where they can be acquired from (e.g. Empower?).

Hey Ben,

Not sure if you ever solved the Greyed out issue, I believe that is related to either not having correct permission on that folder/group where those objects reside or it is that your method filter isn't allowing those objects to be shown. If you switch to Entire Method to test theory and log out and log back in you can see if it is indeed your method filter that is causing the grayed out issue.

This issue is related to the can be solved by assigning the appropriate filter in the Architect Admin area.

Go to Admin> Properties>Palette and Method filter.

can you suggest where the adjustments should be made in order to use the Governance dedicated database? I'm stuck with finding relation between the DB and the ARIS Connect. The Governance extension pack is available and active.

Well, for using individual workflows driven by ARIS Process Governance you need to consider a couple things. Have you read the ARIS Process Governance help pages? http://localhost/abs/help/en/handling/ba/index.htm#49717.htm

Particularly, the chapter Generate executable (in chapter Perform) is important as it defines the prerequisites for your process models to be executable: http://localhost/abs/help/en/handling/ba/index.htm#33266.htm

Apart from that, you should consider attending the 3-days training course Flexible Automation of Business Processes with ARIS to acquire all aspects of process automation within ARIS:

Seven years ago, I know... but I saw this today whilst looking for something else. So, for you (if still interested) or others (if coming to this fresh)...

Not directly helpful, but I can tell you that the object type you're having a problem with is a Function. It is the symbols applied to the functions (there are several) which are missing from your method set-up. FYI: I can correctly see the objects (that are grey-ed out for you) in both Connect and Architect.

However, the associated Data Flow diagrams do not display in Connect.
