- Value Added Chain Diagram (VACD) – Higher level (L2-3), used to show flow of processes
- Function tree- Higher level (L2-3) – used to show hierarchy of processes
- EPC – detail level (L4-5), used to show tasks/activities with corresponding attributes like who, what system, documents etc. Not a swim lane view so cannot see handoffs as easy.
- BPMN – detail level (L3-5) not as informative as the EPC (not as many objects available to use), swim lane view, good to show handoffs. Where EPC does not visually show this.
- Function Allocation Diagram (FAD) – Detail level, moves individual objects out of the L4 EPC/BPMN using an assignment link, but can be seen through the relationships/reporting (example, an EPC has a document object and the separate linked FAD model shows the details of that document. Used in Enablement for BPD generation.

Overall – we should no limit to one model type - it depends on audience, intent, usage etc.
- Ask questions that you want from your models, that may help decide on type, repository set up, attribute and object usage.
- What systems does a Sales associate use?
- What are all the roles/systems used in OTC?
- What SAP executables are used by a specific role?
- I’m a new associate, what are all the processes I do?
- Note, ARIS allows you to toggle between EPC/BPMN - it may not be pretty though.
Happy modeling!
