Hello all
I have installed ARIS Express 2.4 on my MacBook Pro, running Mavericks, and I was able to download the packages, then connect to the internet and confirm my account to complete the setup - then I was presented with the programme itself, which is great.
My problem is that whenever I open the app again, I ALWAYS need to go through the whole process of connecting to the internet, downloading the app and going through the installation. EVERY TIME.
I do not have a clue why this is happening and I am hoping it isn't simply like that for everyone. It'd mean I couldn't use ARIS when I'm without internet and also that I will always waste a lot of time, even with an internet connection.
Thanks in advance,
Dex
Hi Dexter,
what do you mean by "going through the installation"? Does that concern the check for the password as well?
In case of usage on a Mac, Express is handled as a webstart application. Thus, your installed virtual machine handles the installation in the "java cache". It might be, that you did not switched on the option, to keep the "temporary internet files" on the computer. The term "temporary internet files" is quite silly in this context... but this is the java virtual machine, and we do not have influence on that. It might also be that you got some "cleaning" software deleting certain directories after each start.
Considering the registration: if you need to enter your community password at every start of ARIS Express, this is something similar. The corresponding file is deleted.

Thanks for your reply Frank.
So the Java web-applet needs to run every time I open Aris Express? Meaning I can't use it without an internet connection? That's not good. I can't find any settings anywhere on my Mac that allow me to save the Java cache and with it the Aris document files. Any ideas?
No, I am not asked to provide username and password everytime, just to accept all permissions for Aris/Java web-applet.
There seem's to be another bug, which is when I click the small box, confirming that all web-apps with the aris-certificate are allowed to execute, the programme crashes and I just get a report with detailed output.

Hi,
I actually do not know how and where to find the java control panel on the Mac. As shown in the "frequently asked questions" (see here), the option I described must be set correctly. If this is not the case, the application is not stored permanently.
What is the bug appearing when the application is started?
If it has something to do with "casting to rendering hints", this is a problem of the JRE version. See here: http://www.ariscommunity.com/users/siggis/2013-11-07-fehler-bei-start-der-anwendung
(note that the first article is in German, but the links provided in my answer are in english).

Frank,
I followed all leads relating to potential Java problems, without any luck. I still need to download the app each time I use it, having told Java not to delete temporary files etc.. I also don't think it has anything to do with 'casting to rendering'. I guess it is just a bug either with the software running on Mavericks or my laptop. Either way, I don't have enough time to get to the bottom of this for now. Please let me know if you have any other ideas or if there is an general update to the software that could affect my problem in anyway.

Hi,
we rely on the webstart mechanism for unix and Mac systems. Therefore, we do not have any influence on that.
There are hundreds of Mac and Unix users, using Express regularly, and Express is not downloaded everytime.
Sorry so far, but there is nothing we can do.

Hi,
I searched a bit in our community, and found out, at least, partly, what the problem is.
1.) downloading the application everytime.
Yes, this is webstart. The problem is, that Express is stored in the cloud. Since a certain version of the JRE, the check for the files to be downloaded faild. Therefore, the JRE is going to be downloaded, or at least, the files are checked, even if nothing has changed, and even if you told the JRE to keep the "temporary internet files".
But I think you have another problem:
2.) user settings not stored.
In Windows, there is a folder reachable via "%userprofile%/ARISExpress" (don't know how to handle this for the Mac, just search for a folder names "ARISExpress", containing log files etc...)
In case of success, the registration, and more, is stored in this folder. I think your problem is, that after closing express, the files are not stored.
