When you fill up a Task object in a BPMN model with text, the Type icon hides the text in the upper left corner, like the ‘Re’ in Review in the image below.
I can uncheck the ‘Use Entire Symbol Surface for Text Placement’ option but that applies to every object viewed through my ARIS client, so that’s a non-starter. We’re trying to avoid changing the size of objects in BPMN so making it bigger isn’t a good solution either. Using carriage returns in the first row addresses the problem each time, but I'd rather have a universal solution. We’re on a dated version of ARIS (9.8) due to some constraints, so I’m wondering if there’s a good setting change to address this universally?

trying to understand your avoidance of making the symbols bigger: Is it because you want a homogeneous look across the process graphic? It would be simple, to make all task symbols bigger using a template, so they still stay the same size nicely. The other option is reducing the font size, so you have to zoom more to be able to read anything.
I agree carriage return is not a good solution, because you don't want to have carriage return as part of an object's name.
If you were willing to move to modern ARIS 10 the BPMN task symbols by default have a lot more room for text. Also you don't have the blue symbol fill any more, but symbols resembling the BPMN standard more (white background with a standard frame).
If there are technical restrictions regarding the system platform you are using, you might consider moving to the ARISCloud offering. This way you simply migrate your environment to a current ARIS 10 release hosted by Software AG in the cloud and you need not worry too much about updating your environment regularly. That is part of the service. Considering ARIS 9.8 reaches end of maintenance these days it may be a good hook to get this going.
If the cloud subscription is no option for you, of course you could be continuing your on-premise management of an ARIS 10 platform.
