Hi,
I am just dreaming about a BPM application or tools for smart phones (Handheld Devices), so thought of sharing and getting the expertise feedback, suggestions for the same.
I can very well visualize some application performance challenges but thats why I am calling my thought as dream :)
To start with I am thinking of ARIS Express application for iPhone. I am not sure whether anybody tried this or not but for me its making some logic.
Please pardon me if I am mot making any sense.
Thanks
Parveen
Hi Parveen,
indeed, you are raising an interesting topic and we at IDS Scheer also brainstormed about it. Those devices have some limitations, which do not support typical BPM use-cases. For example:
- You only have a small display not allowing you to really get an idea of a single model. So browsing a model might not be really fun. Probably, you will need a completely new way of browsing a model.
- Data input is complicated. I can't imagine to model a diagram just with a touch screen. So you will need some kind of table entry as we got in ARIS Express with SmartDesign. But again, also entering a lot of text is not really fun with those devices.
At the moment, I would say such devices might be a good fit for anything where you just read data, so for example viewing your dashboard.
What use-cases do you expect to be supported by a BPM application for a smartphone?
Cheers,
Sebastian
Hi all,
As possible Use Cases,
- BPM playground device : via Multi-Touch (jump, zoom in-out,etc) and link you can have an virtual journey inside BP. Imagine an social 2.0 game
- Multi protocol interactive notifications
- Tabular dashboard
- etc
Meanwhile these devices seem not adequate for all types of processs. implementations
But IMHO these device will be made more Easy and more Fun the onbording/engagement in a BPM. strategy.
And more important challenges the devices constraint must "lean" and "just enough simple as possible" BP implementations :
- focus on essential informations and virtualize(by providing adequate representations) each document.
- promote interoperable Models (ex. BPMN 2.0)
best regards
Hi All,
@ Sebastian: I agree with you that such devices has limitations with the display and capability of handling complex data. Thinking of using these devices for end to end process definition or design seems like a non-feasible option, but we can definately ease out our efforts of process discovery.
I think it become more logical of developing something for process dashboards (graphs, charts, KPI), process matrix kind of thing, which could be synchronized with the live servers.
@ Djebar: Thanks for your wonderful ideas, very impressive.
My dream start working :)
Cheers
Some of the limitations can be overcome. For instance I have a set of the projection eyeglasses which I use with my iPod (they also work with iPhone or other PDA/smart phones with the right adapters) to watch movies. I get a virtual screen that looks like I'm at home watching a 50 inch flat sceen. Would make an interesting way to walk through a model, I would have even more real estate than on my current desktop.
If some of the innovative devices being used in the world of Wii (and other places) the input and navigation problems will likely be addressed sooner rather than later.
I saw a video over 2 years ago that showed using some advanced graphic capabilities to project a model onto a large screen and be able to use touch screen technology to open edit dialogs and drag and drop objects around the screen. Pretty impressive, but still very expensive. Of course as demand rises the cost will come into reason.
We have to remain open to new technologies to manage models. History tells us that the technology hurdles will not last long.
Nice ideas, Rick.
Parveen, I would be happy enough if initially process model review is at least partially supported. For example, a capability to input remarks when tapped on a symbol and store those remarks in the respective object attribute. Likewise entering model remarks by tapping outside symbols. Things like that...
Hi,
Community may be interested in looking at Sixth Sense technology from MIT Media labs, which could be in the public domain very soon .... hence IDS can extrapolate and prepare the BPM tools for this interface.
'SixthSense' is a wearable gestural interface that augments the physical world around us with digital information and lets us use natural hand gestures to interact with that information

woooow
I am just thinking, how much it feel like working on (practically) on this use case.
No doubt the scenario of working for process design on some virtual / gestural interface is kind of your dream comes true type. But the question is that how many will get and use this chance, probably few.
I am not sure how many will use the option of BPM development with "Sixth Sense" interfaces, devices, if option provided. I think the industry is not yet got mature to implement such an advanced use case.
As Ivo said above in discussion, if we can start providing the basics of BPM (Process Defination, Analysis, Dashboard) that would be wonderful.
