What does the "Maintain" command of the Admintool do in an MS/SQL Server environment?

I recently took over the Admin role for ARIS Business server.  I'm learning the admin role as I go along.  I've looked at the command console Admintool. 

There is a command called "Maintain".  The documention I found says the command performs environment "fixed set of maintenance tasks will be performed depending on the database system."

Is there more detail on what are the specific tasks performed by the "maintain" command in a MS/SQL Server database.

How often should I run this command?

Are there any quirks that I need to be aware of?
