How to create a model

In this post I will show you how to create your first model in ARIS Cloud.

Open ariscloud.com in your browser, select My ARIS Cloud, and log in with your personal login data to open your project room. Click Launch to open the product.

Select Create model to open the database structure.

Click the drop-down arrow to see all databases available. Select the database in which you want to model your first process.  If you open your project room for the first time there will be an example database called “My First Database”.

Click the drop-down arrow next to the database name to open its folder structure. To structure process content it is recommended to create groups. To do so, click the drop-down arrow and select New and Group:

Enter a group name (e.g., Business Processes) and save the group.

In the next step we will create a model in our new group. Select the drop-down arrow again and select Create Model.

A dialog will ask you for a model name and type. Enter a name, select  EPC as the process type, and click OK:

 The new browser tab contains the editing environment for the new model:

First we add a description for the model so that some meaningful text is displayed when the model is viewed in the ARIS Cloud portal view.

 Click Attributes in the upper right corner to open the Attributes bar:

Select More attributes to add further attributes:

In the dialog, select Description/Definition from the drop-down list of attributes and click OK:

Double-click Description/Definition in the Attributes bar, enter a description for your first model, and click OK:

To start modeling your process go to the Symbols bar on the left and select the Event symbol.  Place the object in the model window.

Enter the name Event 1 and confirm with the Enter key.

Select the object again to open the mini toolbar:

Select Function to place the object below the event and enter the name Activity 1 for the new object.

To select further symbols in the mini toolbar click Add symbols.

Select the symbol you would like to add and confirm your selection.

Now you can see the selected object in the mini toolbar. Add the object to the function and define the connection between the two objects.

From the mini toolbar of the object Activity 1 add the next function  Activity 2 and add an Application system type to the left:

Then finish the process model with a final event.

Save your model and close your browser tab.

To see the results in the other ARIS Cloud views you have to return to the portal page

and select the database that you just used to create your model.

Open groups and select the business processes group on the left hand side.

Now you can see your new EPC. Click on the name to open the Model in the different views.
