Hello
I have previously used Aris Express without issue, though I don't recal the version. I finally stopped ignoring the the prompt to upgrade and have not been able to start Aris Express since then.
My VirtualBox is running on my Mac
My Mac version is Sierra 10.12
Virtualbox v 5.1.14
Express 2.4 1115144
I get the error 'Unable to find a JRE in the specified directory. Please repair the settings in launcher.cfg and try again'
Can someone help with this? I'm more of a Mac that Windows user but can follow instructions and can find my way around Windows 10. I have already searched online for this issue, including the forums, but the mixture of instructions have not actually resolved the issue.
Did you read this article?

Did you check this reply http://www.ariscommunity.com/users/chni/2015-04-20-aris-98-education-and-research-out-now#comment-19491 and the ones below that?
Before I can continue with that thread, I need to highlight that for my installation, the following is not true:
"
in the path "<aris client installation path>\client\config", there is a file named "launcher.cfg", ....."
There is no launcher.cfg file in there.
This file is found in:
/client/jre/lib
Hi Russel,
the error you mention happen for a low percentage of users... it was not reproducible on our side, though.
You can ignore this message about the user.cfg... this is a message that should not appear at all.
I would recommend just do deinstall Express from your virtual box.
Instead, install the webstart solution. Install a 32 bit JRE on your system (which means on your VirtualBox) and click onto that link (and this is the correct jnlp file):

Hello, on my Windows 10 via Virtual box, I download the linked file you posted and when I open it, nothing happens. This seems to create a file called 'express' which is a JNLP file. it's 7kb in size. What's meant to happen when I launch it? I removed Uninstalled Aris Express as you said and also deleted the programme files folder and nothing happens. When I click that file, it opens my 'View Downloads' dialogue box and I see that file in the downloads. I click 'open', there's a momentary flash on the screen and then nothing.
Hi,
one step back:
we deliver Express in two different ways:
1.) the windows installation (which installs a local application, as usual)
2.) as a Java webstart application (which is the jnlp file, actually, forcing the JRE do download Express)
Since the installation does not work with solution "1.)" on your vm box, you would need to use solution "2.)".
Yes, for this you need a JRE installed in your vm (whereas the windows installation comes with its own JRE).
Normally, the "jnlp" file extension is assigned to the file "javaws.exe", that is placed in "<jre installation path>\bin".
If nothing happens, maybe the file type assignment to the "javaws.exe" does not exist on your vm. So, with context menu on the jnlp file, "open with..." assign to javaws.exe
Bye,
Frank
OK, so I've gone to the java, com download and installed java for windows. Now what? Do I re-install Aris on my Windows 10 and try to run or is there something else?
What do you mean by JRE installed on your VM, do you mean on my Windows 10 on my virtual box? How do I install java on virtual box separately to Windows?
Have you tried to double click the .JNLP file? Windows will then prompt you to assign that file extension to an app which can handle such files. Select javaws.exe in your local JRE 32-bit installation (e.g. C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre1.8.0_...\bin). That should result into downloading ARIS Express.

In my W10 VirtualBox image I just installed ARIS Express the way Frank suggested:
- Opened the ARIS Express download URL http://download.ariscommunity.com/express.jnlp
- Assigned Java Web Start Launcher to the downloaded file express.jnlp
- That downloaded and installed ARIS Express
- I confirmed the security prompt whether I want to trust that application
- And then the Activation Wizard popped up Welcome to ARIS Express where I entered my ARIS Community user name and password
Did that work for you?

Even after downloading It does nto give me an option to launch with java web start. I went through the full installation on their site. The java web start does not appear as an option anywhere. On the Mac this process is very simple (though it won't open Aris Express) but on the Window 10, I don't know where the app is....
Java Web Start Launcher is the javaws.exe located in the installed JRE 32-bit.
If you don't have that yet installed, or being not 100% sure, download it in your VBox:
- Goto https://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp and cick Windows Offline
- You will download (today) the JRE setup jre-8u121-windows-i586.exe
- Run that setup to get 32-bit JRE installed into C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre1.8.0_121
- Click again the above URL for downloading ARIS Express as express.jnlp file, and assign it with Java Web Start Launcher which is this EXE: C:\Program Files (x86)\Java\jre1.8.0_121\bin\javaws.exe
▲But don't pick a wrong EXE file since there are many different ones for different purposes in the same folder

May I recommend that you pin your last reply, as I would be surprised if no one else has had the difficulty of installing this. The last post fixed everything. Windows 10 is not so obvious when selecting an app. You have to open the explorer and find it that way. Thanks.
Hi,
@Kimberly: just wanted to mention, that you do not need to user a windows vm for using mac. Express 2.4d runs for mac, to:
