In this article, I want to focus on 3 aspects of how ARIS can help to tackle automation projects.

The Power of Process Mining: Discovering Automation Candidates

Process mining is a data-driven approach used to analyze and visualize an organization's business processes based on event logs from various systems and applications. It can be a valuable tool for identifying automation candidates within an organization using the process discovery methods and the app builder dashboards in ARIS Process Mining. Let’s have a look at how this can be done.

If you already have the data of the process you want to have a look in ARIS Process Mining, you need to think about why a process or a certain step should be automated. This could lead to certain KPIs that should lead to a more strategic goal for the automation projects overall. Those KPIs could be gained from process mining. Automation candidates are often tasks or activities within the process that are repetitive, rule-based, time-consuming, or error-prone. You can also look at a combination of the KPIs and decide on what is more important from case to case.

If you know already which steps have been automated, you can also measure the automation rate and estimate the value gained from an automation project.

Then an approach could be to go with the most valuable automation project.

Another indicator could be an identified bottleneck in the process. Those bottlenecks can simply be spotted in the process explorer. They can lead to a performance issue that could potentially be removed using an automation approach. But also there, the value of automation needs to be estimated e.g. in a dashboard like shown above. 

Measuring the success of your Automation with ARIS Process Mining

After the automation project has been successfully implemented, it needs to prove its value. But how can this then be measured? One example is if you take the same KPI's that you used to identify the automation candidates in the first place. This allows you to stick to the goals you initially identified and use the KPIs to not only validate the automation that has been implemented but also measure the impact on the automation goals. If you, for example want to improve the overall efficiency, the throughput of processes or the time per order that went through the processes could be a measure.

Once automation projects are implemented, process mining tracks their performance. It allows for quick adaptations, ensuring that automated processes continue to align with business objectives. ARIS Process Mining allows to keep track of all KPIs that have been defined in the first place and allows you to not only validate but also compare the behavior. Using this you can benchmark the old process that was used to identify the candidates with the newly implemented one.

The success of automation is often measured in time and cost savings. ARIS Process Mining allows to quantify these savings, providing clear, data-driven evidence of the effectiveness of automation projects.

ARIS in general not only helps to measure a process or find automation candidates, but it could also help you to keep track of all the automations that have been implemented. Acting as your single point of truth when it comes to automation. Automation blueprints can be stored in the ARIS repository and directly be mapped with projects of ARIS Process Mining. 

This does not only allow you to implement those robots, and workflows or other automations, but describe them in an easy-to-understand model, linked with measurements that lead to the goal of the automation strategy. The process model can additionally be reused as a reference model for the conformance check. This conformance check will help you validate the automation in the form of robots or workflows.
