Hi Murad.
You can find the following information in the online help in this community (see link "Help" above).
Function (or, in Express, Activity):

Dear Murad,
Are you a freshman in the BPM world? Well, that's not a shame since all experts started from there where you are probably now, e.g. finding your way through the different modeling standards.
But even if you are not new in the world of process modeling, I'd recommend to have a look at the free e-learning courses provided by the ARIS Online Academy:
Both courses are probably the easiest way to get to know the world of BPM from the basics. Some interactive exercises will help you to foster the gained knowledge.
You will learn about
- the ARIS methodology as modeling standards,
- the ARIS Platform as BPM software and
- ARIS Value Engineering as guiding principles helping you to define the roadmap for introducing process-oriented solutions.
Cheers

Hello Murad
One way to differentiate:
> an event has no duration. It is a milestone, a state, a flag...
> a function (aka activity or task) always has a duration.
Hope that helps.
Bgrds,

For the sake of easy understanding I agree with Activity (Fuction) being presented as a synonym of Task. Otherwise it's mixing type (logical) with instance (physical) level. One of the things I hate about BPMN is that while aiming precision in workflow patterns, it lacks rigour in the basics. Well, PM methods don't seem to care either.
Murad, sorry if that created confusion. -
If something produces result or eats resources - it is a FUNCTION.
The rest you can place into the EVENT category.
And do not forget that modelling - is just another view on a complex things.
2 people could have 3 different views on the same things while beeing in disagreement with each other.
It applies to the FUNCTION and EVENT definition as well.

Quite often (some) starting events are used as pre-conditions, not as triggers.

This is the way I see Events and Functoins. You can call it a layman terms.
Events= some sort of a situation where no action is required.
Function= some sort of doing. An action. Something is being done.
I come accross many people confused with the term "events" and "functions".

I agree with Rupesh Shrestha for event and Activity, thats why EVENT and Activity exists , giving you the clear picture of cause and effects rule (if something happened , happened for the reasons)
For an example:-
Event=babies Birthday
Activities= Lets make budget, find place to celebrate, menu fo dinner, whom to call, return gifts, cake design/size etc etc. (where action, authorization, resource is involved.)
and 1 more thing you might get some diff rules in other BPM tool as well..
Regards
Pravesh
