Hello,
I need to adjust an existing model in project draft mode -can I duplicate an existing map? I tried to import emf file but it does not recognize the format, even though it's exported from Aris.
thank you for the support!

Hello Olga,
EMF is a graphics format. It does not contain model information, just pixels or vectors. Consider it another way of making screenshots from models.
1. You can duplicate models. If you do a definition copy, in the new model you have new objects. You can edit them independently from the source model, but it will be difficult to merge your results back to the source objects.
2. You could merge a model to a second ARIS database, do your draft work there and after some quality gate is reached you merge it back to your source database. This way the identity of the objects is preserved and what is changed can be replaced cleanly.
Make up a strategy, how you want to handle this in general. Some companies have "Development" and "Production" databases, where "Production" is essentially what the company looks like today and "Development" is where you develop the state of tomorrow. Maybe you also want another "Staging" database.

Thank you for your input!
could you please elaborate a bit on option 1? we have Development and Production environment and I would like to work in draft mode on a Production map to elaborate something new.
thanks a lot!
Hello Olga,
consider that a production database typically is published some way or another, so depending on your publishing governance process your draft runs a certain risk of getting published.
I dare say the normal way to accomplish this is transferring your production content to your development database and do your modifications there, that is unless different modifications are under way on those models in the development instance.
A definition copy of a model is a second model with definition copies of all objects occurring in it. So you actually create a new set of objects with that. Often that is undesirable, especially if that clutters your production database. Another way would be a "Variant copy". Essentially that is the same as a definition copy, except that ARIS draws a special "variant" connection between the objects of the original and the variant. The original is also called the "master" in relation to the variant. You can do a graphical comparison in the Architect client between master and variant models. Otherwise the same disadvantages apply as for definition copies.
Maybe you can persuade your ARIS admins to create another "Project" database for you? It would be your personal "Development" database (or for your project team). Some companies also have a "Release" database with everything intended to go live at the same release date.
