Hello all,

Does anyone know of a tool to convert ARIS process maps into Swim Lane process maps (such as Visio)?

The reason as to why I’m asking is because, some of my business colleagues have found it difficult to easily identify the responsibilities of a role when viewing an ARIS process map – whereas a swim lane process map would easily identify the responsibilities of a role.

Any suggestions/tools (whether available from IDS Scheer or outside) would be helpful.

Thanks

Why don't you just use an EPC row/column display? You can generate one from a regular EPC automatically. Obviously you will un into "interesting visualization" problems when you have more than one role conected to a function - but this is a disadvantage of swimlanes (in any notation).

Hi Roland.

You said that it is possible to automatically generate an EPC column display model from a regular EPC diagram.

Can you explain how to do that?

Thanks in advance.

Using the full ARIS its quite normal to "view" a process via different methods and its fairly easy to switch between an EPC and a SwimLane view. I've not attempted this as yet using ARIS Express , but I must look into that.   BUT.. You should take these sorts of user viewing requirements into consideration when you plan to start the modelling work. This will save a lot of problems and possible rework later.

The problem I have with the ARIS EPC column/row is that the headers specify role and application in combination.  I want only the role or maybe sometimes I want the application to be the header.  I have not yet had a need for the combination.

Jorge, use the "Generate Model" functionality. Unfortunately I am not close to my ARIS installation right now (yes, this happens even to IDS employees sometimes ;-), so you might want to check the help for the correct procedure description.

Hi Roland.

With your tip about the "Generate Model" functionality I've succesfully converted my EPC model to an EPC (column diagram) in 4 steps. It's really simple. Thanks for the help.

I didn't know that this functionality could be applied to a model.

Now there's a small "problem" with this process. I need to apply this procedure to a set of considerable large models with "hand placed" symbols.

When I convert the EPC model to a EPC (column diagram) model the ARIS automatically re-arrange the layout using his own rules. Is there any option that I could activate that force ARIS to place the symbols on the new model with the original layout?

Best regards.

I am not aware of this and am not sure if you can change it, since a) you need to apply some algorithm to the new model and b) since org units and app system types will be moved into the first row the layout will change anyhow.

This is the same behavior that the layout wizard shows (be warned: if you apply the wizard there is no undo if you are not happy with the result, so try this with a copy of your model to check if you like it ;-).

Thanks Roland.

This situation is not affecting all the models, just a few of them. I got a colleague helping me with this situation and we will do this by hand.

Thanks a lot for the help.
