In Import models from Microsoft Visio (Aris Express help article) says:
"Drawings are automatically mapped to predefined model types; shapes to predefined object types. If no mapping is available, ...". I already search the ARIS Community for mapping of Visio templates, stencils or shapes to Aris Express models types and/or object types, but I don't find any article with this information.
Thanks in advance.
Dear Mr. Rivera,
the Visio import is not yet documented at the moment. The xml based mapping between Visio and ARIS elemenst is fixed and cannot be configured by the user in ARIS Express. But we plan to have a configurable mapping in a later phase when this functionality will be part of ARIS Business Architect too.
I' propose that you contact Frank Weyand or Torsten Haase directly via their community profile, they should be able to provide you detail information about the existing mapping (at least the mapping xml file itself).
Best regards
Uwe Roediger
Dear Mr. Rivera,
for Visio import the following drawing types are mapped to ARIS model types:
EPC Diagram --> Business process
Organization Chart --> Organizational chart
Basic Flowchart --> general diagram
Cross Functional Flowchart --> general diagram
Brainstorming Diagram --> general diagram
Work Flow Diagram --> Business process
Basic/Detailed Network Diagram --> IT infrastructure
Database Model Diagram --> Data model
Enterprise Application Model --> IT infrastructure
Audit Diagram --> general diagram
All other drawings are mapped to the model type "general diagram".
Best regards, Torsten
Before my post I tried to import one of the Visio 2007 samples, the "Process Improvement (Metric)" wich appears to be a Cross Functional Flowchart. It was imported as a "general diagram". I think that this happens because each of the process shapes has a data graphic attached. I think that this should be noted by any who would like to promote a migration from Visio to Aris Express.

Rubén
Hi, we have created models in Visio 2003 using the itp-commerce BPMN stencils.
We have saved the files as .vdx. On importing, we get the error "TypeError: Cannot read property "length" from undefined".
Any assistance would be appreciated, as we have modelled extensively and are now planning on using ARIS express, as an interim step prior to purchasing the full blown commercial version of ARIS.
Our version of ARIS Express is v 2.0 - 7.1.0.457215
Cheers,
Tracey
Hi Tracey,
there are 2 prerequisites to use the Visio import in Express:
1.) you need to use Visio 2007
2.) you need to use a drawing type from the list my colleague Torsten described above.
Currently, there is no mapping available from Visio to the Express BPMN model.
In ARIS Business Architect, this is also the case, but you can create this mapping by your own.
Bye,
Frank
Hi there,
Has anybody imported Visio files with a '2-part metric' object from Visio successfully into ARIS? Currently ARIS (Business architect) only shows me a normal Function with no description. I was looking through the mapping.xml file but could not find out where to map the description fields.
Regards,
Ronald
Hi, I've tried to import Visio.VDX files to ARIS 7.2 (using Visio 2007 EPC template) but failed to do so. I saw the following error message “The model type and/or symbols are not allowed by the current method filter. The import was canceled”. Any idea what went wrong?
Thanks,
Joseph
We are attempting to import Visio 2007 files into ARIS Business Architect as well as ARIS Express and we received the exact same error in both applications.
Error: "Incorrect file version (no template name). File(file name) does not exist in Visio 2007 format."
Procedure: The original file was created in Visio 2010 but save to a vdx. We imported into Visio 2007 and save it as a vsd. We edited the vsd file and then created the vdx in from that edited Visio 2007 vsd file.
Cause: I perceive it may be caused by two potential problems. One the BPMN2.0 stencils are not available in Visio 2007 and the XML (vdx) export is not properly tagging the data elements. Or, the mapping of BPMN objects in the Visio XML file (vdx) is not configured in ARIS Business Architect or ARIS Express to a "General Diagram" that allows for interpretation of the object and symbol relationship.
All help greatly appreciated.
Hi Frank,
We are encountering the same "The model type and/or symbols are not allowed by the current method filter" error in filter "Entire Method" in Business Architect 7.2. We intend to convert .vdx files created in Visio 2007, to EPCs. Can you give an idea where the problem lies?
Thanks!
