We use DO-178 & ARP 4754 and modify the process based on Design Assurance Level. I don't want to have two processes, I just want to show that a step is required based on whether it is DAL A, B, C, D, or E. What is the best way to show that in ARIS?
Also, if a work product requires an independent review based on DAL, how would I show that? In this case, the process would say create the XYZ report, but whether it needs an independent review is based on DAL.
Anyone implement this in ARIS?
thank you
Steve
Hello Steve,
multiple options how to achieve that. You did not mention, if you model EPC or BPMN style. I'll assume EPC.
When there is a decision in the process to do or not do the following step depending on DAL, model it like any other decision in EPC: XOR-Rule followed by events additionally indicating which minimum/maximum DAL is necessary to follow that process path.
Other option: Define attributes "Minimum DAL" and "Maximum DAL" for the functions and agree on the convention that the step is to be omitted, when the DAL criteria are not met. You could define mini-symbols for the DA levels and show them in the diagram.
I would prefer the first option, because the drawback of the second is that the process sequence may become error prone or ambiguous, particularly when you have other decisions in the process flow, but the decision step is omitted due to DAL level. Reporting on and understanding the real process flow becomes difficult, although the diagram may look simpler.
You can apply this principle to the DAL dependent reviews as well. Usually a review is performed by a different role anyway, so it deserves a process step of its own.
