Dear ARIS community,

I am wondering which symbol you would recommend in EPC for the usage of physical objects like an MDE device. I am struggeling a bit - because it is neither an IT application nor in input.

Your thoughts are highly welcome :)

Best,

Veronika

What's an MDE device? A device for "mobile Datenerfassung"? Wikipedia says this would be a Portable Data Terminal in English.

As far as I understand it, this is a portable computer running one or more applications, so I'd probably use an Application System Type in the EPC and connect this to a Hardware Component Type in an Access Diagram. Pretty standard.

If this fits your needs might also depend on the relationship types that are available for connecting the application or the hardware to other object types. For example, in the EPC the application would 'support' a function that is carried out by a role or similar.

Hi,

you're right- MDE refers to a German abbreviation. I wasn't thinking about that.

I would like to refer to the hardware component, thus the handheld type. Of course, the handheld runs with some operating system- but this is not relevant in the process. It would be more relevant for the process consumer whether it is handheld A, B, or C. I like the idea of hardware component (type, ...). But there is too little information in the ARIS help text available. So, I am wondering which one would be the right object in that case.

Can you advise?

Best,

Veronika

Hello Veronika,

in the sense of any resource needed for an activity ("If I had a hammer...") I suggest operating resource type (Betriebsmitteltyp):
typifies individual operating resources that are based on precisely the same technology
(cf. /abs/help/en/method/#/home/HELPID_OT_OP_RES_TYPE/en/1)

That's actually pretty neat! Thanks a lot for that :)

Only thing that I would change is: use the object "operating resource" not the type one, so that I can use it directly in our EPCs.

Best,

Veronika

You are right, that is what we do anyway. I did not care for this restriction in the method help, only for the analogy to hardware type. But then the semantics is of instances of devices "identified by inventory numbers", not types A, B, C of a handheld. It depends on how you want to use/evaluate the object beyond the connection in the EPC.

Looks like some columns of ye merry olde ARIS House are out of kilter here: application system and app.system type are meant for EPCs alike.

Regards, Martin
