PM

Hello,

I am doing a project, and the objective is to understand all the processes that a certain organization have. The late goal will be to have a BPMs tool for some automatic taks, so I will need to use BPMN as the modeling notation at certain point.

I am facing some difficulties since they want to structure the process modeling in four different levels:

- Level "0" diagrams with Level 1 and level 2 objects representing the aggregators (macro-processes) and the processes main activities that will be decomposed in the lower levels -----> So, for example would be something like "Manage HR" as a level 1 object with "Onbording" as a level 2 object "inside" (connected).

- Level "1" diagrams with Level 3 objects where you would already have some flows but still non atomic activities. Using the previous example we would have the several activities of the Onboarding process (f. e.g. "IT Setup")

- Level 2 and Level 3 diagrams with atomic activities that will represent the detail of the processes and activities, but aligned with the objective of the automation process that will be settle using a BPMs in the future.

My main questions and where I would very much appreciate your help is:

-What are the best or the right option that I should use to model the several levels? Should I use a process diagram for the first ones and BPMN for the lower levels? I need to understand what is the best option if I want to link the processes and the activities with non BPMN objects like KPIs, Risks, Process Owners, etc. Is it possible or should this information be modeled as an attribute?

-Depending on the previous answer what kind of objects should I use?

If you have some other ideas that you want to share, please feel free to that and I will be thankfull.

Thank you very much in advanced.

Pedro

Hi Pedro, yes I think you should I use a process diagram for the first levels and BPMN for the lower levels.

I think you should find some examples on the BPMN online videos made by Aris. You can see the BPMN - Export diagram quick video that shows how to organize process levels and export BPMN diagrams.

Hope this helps

Hi Pedro:

BPMN has a hierarchical nature and you can use that to model your high level and atomic activities using the collapsed sub-process.

1. Start with building a high level process model. BPMN is, by nature, hierarchical, so it lends itself naturally to your needs. You can use collapsed sub-processes to model those lower level processes. Use this level to represent the entire process, all collaborations, and black box pools. I suggest you keep the high level model to ~12 high level flow nodes.

2. Build on and build out each collapsed sub-process.

3. Keep on developing lower level models as appropriate.

4. Process owners can be represented with swim lanes in the native process.

5. IMHO, BPMN is designed to model business processes using activities, flows, actors, and messages. and Performance Indicators is a value that represents performance over a period of time. You can better represent KPI's with graphs, charts, or some tool separately.

6. Risk is not really a sequence flow. I would represent risk separately in a probability matrix.

Hope this helps
