I just returned from our weekly ARIS Express status meeting and I want to give you an update about the current progress. Not even 2 months ago, we released ARIS Express to the public, but there are already 10.000 registered copies. People from all over the world are using ARIS Express and share their models here in ARIS Community. Currently, you can also win an iPod Touch if you share your ARIS Express model with ARIS Community members.

Currently, our engineers focus on bringing the ARIS Express features to our professional products such as ARIS Business Architect. During this process, it might be that we will also slightly change the features inside of ARIS Express so that a transition from ARIS Express to our professional products is as smooth as possible.

So far, we only received few bug reports. There are 1 or 2 open issues, which will require an update of ARIS Express in the coming weeks. We will inform you as soon as this update is available!

Sebastian,

What is the way to report bugs in ARIS Express. I don't see a special group or something not that there is official release.

Two issues that immediately come to mind are:

1. When putting a special symbol for a documents name (save as...) there is no message that it's not allowed, it's just not saved and that's it

2. In every new symbol the Name appears sometimes bold, sometimes not.

For my part, I issued the following issues (evolution or Bug, I leave you to judge).

1 - Links models

2 - Problem with SmartDesign windows

I also noticed the same issues published by Ivo.

I disabled my cleaning software that required me to reinstall AE.

With the official release of ARIS Express the former beta tester group has been renamed to ARIS Express Support Group - You can find the instructions on how to report a bug here.

Hi Pascal,

your first point is not a bug report but a feature request. The second point is also more a feature request, even though one could argue that it should be possible to use ARIS Express in a multi-screen setup.

The problem with software cleaning the user profile on each startup is something we can't fix in ARIS Express, because it happens outside of ARIS Express. However, I will add a FAQ entry for it.

do you already know when ARIS express new features will be available for ABA/ABD? My customer is indeed very interested in the new symbols amongst other things.

A few weeks ago, Frank Weyand was speaking of the end of this year.

It will be part of the next service release of ARIS Platform. Yesterday, we just release service release ARIS 7.1 2009_04. I don't know at the moment how the next one will be called and I think the release date is also not fixed yet.

I'm not certain if this is a bug or not...but yesterday I created a heap of organisation charts using smartdesign. I saved, exited & came back later to work on them without issue.

Today, however, I don't seem to have the smartdesign option enabled. the buttons on the menu bar are greyed out, and when I right click on the shape smart design is not one of the options to select??

Am I going crazy, or am I doing something incorrectly?

I hope someone can help me quite quickly.

I've just experienced the same greying out of the "Group" option under the "Arrange" menu when 2 or more objects were selected. (Similarly, "Group" is not available on the right hand menu.).

This problem didn't occur on a new diagram, where only those 2 objects were present. However, the symptoms appeared as soon as the objects were placed in a pool or swim lane. Moving the objects outside the pool/swim lane caused the Group option to become available again.

This is a bug which needs fixing. I can't believe no one else has experienced it.

Hi,

it is not possible to group objects, which are "embedded" into other objects. Embedded just means that one object is located inside another object, and between both is a aris connection. For example placing a task into a pool or lane.

This is a known restriction of our designer. It has a technical background. Maybe we will fix this in future releases.

I'm afraid its a bug.

If the objects are dragged (or created) outside the Pool, grouped there (since the group menu option is now available), then dragged back to their original position, it becomes possible to Ungroup them. They can also now be (re)grouped in the Pool object (unlike other objects which haven't been moved) - so why does grouping now work for these objects, when it previously didn't? Its inconsistent.

Hi,

there is a difference: if you put ungrouped objects into the pool, then a aris connection is created between both. But if you put grouped objects into the pool, then no connection is created between both.

Ou can see the difference, when you move the pool. In the first case the objects remain inside the pool and they also change their position. In the second case, the group does not change its position - there is no relation between the pool and those objects.

Hi,

That may be so, but when objects grouped outside the pool are moved into it (ie no connection), and then ungrouped, you would expect (and hope) the individual objects would act as if they HAD been created in the pool (ie connected to it) but they do not, and they remain independent. This could be confusing as there is nothing to distinguish them from other objects (which are connected), and no obvious way to reconnect them.
