In the past months, various authors in the blogosphere guessed that BPM might be dead. We saw this kind of discussion before for SOA as we entered the trough of disillusionment. Personally, I’m not surprised by this discussion, but I just don’t get it. In my view, BPM is alive and kicking and here are some reasons for my assessment:

  • For the first time ever, major BPM and workflow vendors committed to ONE single process notation – BPMN 2. Many new products are launched supporting this notation. Each day, new books about BPMN are published. We also have vivid BPMN communities all over the net.
  • Last Friday, member 40,000 signed up for ARIS Community. People are joining ARIS Community to share about BPM and to get started with modelling by downloading ARIS Express. So BPM is a very attractive topic, because 40,000 people in less than a year can’t be wrong!
  • In our initial planning for ProcessWorld, we aimed at two major events for 2010 (Berlin and Washington). However, there was so much interest that we already conducted an additional stop 2 weeks ago in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Also, registrations for the two upcoming events are very strong this year.

So BPM is everything, but not dead! Don’t get fooled by authors just trying to introduce a new acronym for an existing hot topic ;-)
