The Enterprise BPM Framework can be a basis for information management

In my previous blog posts, I have discussed the principles of the Enterprise BPM Framework and the definition of BPM maturity levels. The Enterprise BPM Framework can be used to; Discover the business issues and improvements (using the BPM Maturity Model) Discover the BPM projects and tools (using the BPM Framework) Discover the BPM stakeholders (using the BPM Stakeholders Map) Discover the BPM benefits (using the BPM Value Map)

    Process cost calculation methods

While my last article explained how to determine your process costs and times by means of ARIS scripts, I will now provide information on how to obtain an exact calculation of the process costs by using ARIS Business Optimizer. The problem that needs to be solved for every process is to find out what are the individual cost items and to determine the amount of costs for the functions and cost centers. ARIS Business Optimizer provides a rules set that you can use to this effect.

Is BPM just a bunch of projects?

When I started to delve into the ARIS world some years ago, I was surprised that it is very common to have several ARIS databases. This came as a surprise, because I always thought the main idea of all this modelling effort is to create a unified enterprise model stored in a single repository. Still, many customers use different databases to document different domains like sales and product processes.

Determine your process costs and times

Compared to actual processes (as-is), target processes (to-be) are usually expected to bring about improvements in terms of cost and time. For example, an improved process should cost less and its execution should be faster.

Finding a path through the ARIS world II

Let me continue with our example from my last article. We’re still interested to find out, how our department is connected to the Application systems. To try out the pathfinder approach, I make a small experiment: I use the easy filter and focus on the method (neglecting the content of a database). First I check, whether there is a direct relation available and yes it is, with two different relation types in between!

What makes up an Enterprise Architecture Management System (EAMS)? Taxonomy of capabilities…

Would you prefer to compare apples with apples (well, I do not mean 3G with 4G) or apples with carrots? I assume that being in a supermarket and looking for some healthy groceries instead of mixing them you would rather compare the same kind of fruits or vegetables. Interestingly, the same is true for enterprise architecture management tools! So looking for a way to automate EAM capability, companies are kicking off vendor selection process.

Finding a way through the „ARIS world”

In the preparation for an improved analysis functionality within ARIS, we discussed several approaches to find a way through the data in a database on the ARIS server. In general there are two different possibilities. I will try to explain this by giving an example: The manager of a department needs to find out, which applications are used within his department (to plan the number of licenses he needs to apply for the next year).

    Models and Time

Such a topic could easily attract philosophical speculations. However, the intention here is to make a short and pragmatic walk within the territory that's common for this community. And I hope it will kick off some fruitful discussion. Models in time Let's review the all too familiar transformational tenet "AS-IS/TO-BE" with three aspects: reality, models and time. It will again be a model, inevitably a wrong one but hopefully a bit useful.
